Who is Next to Face Manny Pacquiao?

While WBA (Super) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is currently dealing with the Senate in the Philippines, plans are underway to determine his next fight.

Pacquiao is coming off a memorable 2019, a year that saw him easily handle Adrien Broner to retain the WBA (Regular) welterweight title in January before returning to the ring six months later to defeat Keith Thurman for the WBA (Super) title. Pacquiao’s performance in the Thurman fight drew comparisons of the Filipino athlete in his prime.

Now, Pacquiao and his team at MP Promotions feel 2020 could be an even bigger year.

According to Sean Gibbons, MP Promotions president, the three realistic opponent options for Pacquiao currently are Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia and Shawn Porter.

“If we had to narrow it down, Porter and the Garcias are the three names on the table,” Gibbons said.

Danny Garcia is coming off an April finish of Adrian Granados, and he was planned to face Errol Spence Jr. in Spence’s first defense as unified IBF/WBC welterweight champion. Those plans, however, have been put on hold as the result of Spence’s recovery from a car accident.

Mikey Garcia has not been seen in a boxing ring since losing his undefeated record to Spence in their March welterweight title fight. Porter, meanwhile, was the WBC welterweight champion before he lost the title to Spence in a Fight of the Year candidate in September.

Mikey Garcia may drop out of the mix soon, however, as a fight between him and Jessie Vargas is being targeted.

Adding to the uncertainty is the tease of a Floyd Mayweather comeback, as a rematch between the two of their record-breaking 2015 encounter has been teased with several times for the past couple of years.
