Who Will Sanction Fury vs. Usyk?

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has said Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk will not be sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC).

Sulaiman confirmed the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship on May 18 will be sanctioned by a separate boxing commission, which will be the Middle East Professional Boxing Commission. It follows the same line of reasoning as Fury’s last fight with Francis Ngannou, which also took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The news also means The United States Boxing Association will not sanction it. While the BBBoC did not sanction that fight, they oversaw the rest of the Fury-Ngannou card.

“For the main event it will be the Middle East Professional Boxing Commission. It’s only the main event, all the other fights will be under the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC). I believe it was an agreement in the contract to sign the fight. They demanded a neutral commission. Jose Mohan is a German who has sanctioned many bouts in Dubai and here in Saudi Arabia. They are very trained and ready to perform,” Sulaiman said

This is because Fury does not have a British Boxing License. The Gypsy King gave up his British License after a UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) investigation into his failed test for nandrolone in 2015. A farmer admitted lying in the investigation when claiming he had given Fury some boar meat following his failed test for nandrolone, which could then have explained the substance in his system. Fury ultimately got a two-year backdated ban.

Tommy Fury confirmed last year that his brother, Tyson, could not travel to the US. He did not give a reason, although reports suggest it is due to Fury’s association with Daniel KinahanKinahan had advised Fury and was the head of an Irish crime gang.

The US government reportedly responded by offering a $5 million reward for information on the group if it led to their arrest. However, Tommy failed to confirm if Tyson’s US ban was due to this. But come fight night, Fury’s main focus will be on beating Usyk.
