Who Would Manuel Charr Like To Fight After Signing With EC Boxing?
Not competing professionally since 2017, Manuel Charr is ready to finally defend the WBA Heavyweight Championship. Under new management, he is hoping to face some of the elite heavyweights today.
Charr (31-4) discussed signing with Erol Clayton and gearing up for future fights. It is rumored that he will face off against Trevor Bryan, the interim WBA Champion. If he were to win, the 35-year-old has his eye on a former champion and the current WBC and lineal heavyweight champion.
“I am sure that Erol, with his good connections to the USA, is just the right partner at my side,” said Charr, via Sky Sports. “I would like to fight Andy Ruiz and then target Tyson Fury.”
Making his professional debut in 2005, Charr first fought for a world title in 2012. He lost to WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko via TKO. After that, he won the WBC Baltic and WBC Mediterranean Heavyweight Titles. The Beirut-born Charr continued to fight the best heavyweights, including Alexander Povetkin and Mairis Briedis. He ended up beating Sefer Seferi for the vacant WBA International Heavyweight Title in 2016.
“Diamond Boy” won the WBA Heavyweight Title in 2017 against Alexander Ustinov. He was supposed to fight Fres Oquendo in 2018 but he tested positive for Drostanolone and Trenbolone. He was reinstated as champion following an appeal. With an entity he believes will give him a clear shot, Charr feels right at home.
“Mahmoud was and is always part of the ECB family,” Ceylan stated, via Boxing Scene. “We are currently restructuring our stable, aligning ourselves strategically. Following Victor Faust’s commitment, we now have Mahmoud, a reigning heavyweight world champion. We are very well positioned and I am is convinced that he will soon have big fights.”
Andy Ruiz recently signed with Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso and does not have a fight booked. Fury is booked to face Deontay Wilder in a trilogy bout, and is scheduled (in principle) to face Anthony Joshua to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion. If Charr had his way, he will look to crash the party.
It is unknown as of this moment when Charr will return to action.
