Why Does Daniel Cormier Think Jon Jones Is Out Of Touch?

Daniel Cormier isn’t sure what Jon Jones is thinking by teasing a fight with Jan Blachowicz.

Jones vacated the UFC Light-Heavyweight Championship to start bulking up for a move to the heavyweight division. At UFC 253, Blachowicz and Dominick Reyes collided for the vacant 205-pound gold. Blachowicz scored the second-round TKO victory to capture the championship.

After the fight, Blachowicz called out Jones. “Bones” responded on Twitter by asking if fans would be “annoyed” if he fought Blachowicz. During an edition of the DC & Helwani Show, Cormier criticized Jones over the tweet (h/t MMAJunkie.com).

“That’s so whack. Have you ever met a guy that’s so out of touch? He’s so out of touch. It’s like, OK, Jon, then why not just go, ‘I was afraid of Dominick Reyes. Now I want to go back to 205 and fight Jan Blachowicz because he beat Dom’? That’s crazy. I mean, who does that? Who does that?

“He could have fought Reyes. This could have been him and Reyes (Saturday). This was supposed to be him and Reyes. Instead, he gave up the belt. He gave up the belt and said, ‘I want to fight at heavyweight.’ Now, ‘Maybe, I’ll go back?’ How could you be so out of touch? I don’t get it.”

Things appeared to be tamer between Cormier and Jones, who had a heated rivalry when “DC” was an active fighter. While Cormier made it clear he’d never be chummy with Jones, he did say that being cordial and having mutual respect is doable.

Jones did make a follow-up tweet saying he had second thoughts and congratulated Blachowicz. “Bones” hasn’t been promised a heavyweight title shot right away but UFC President Dana White has said he wouldn’t be opposed to it. As of now, Francis Ngannou is expected to be next in line for a shot at Stipe Miocic’s UFC Heavyweight Championship.
