Why Is Tyron Woodley Training With Jorge Masvidal Again?

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley has explained why he’s back in the gym with Jorge Masvidal.

Woodley has long sung the praises of Masvidal. “The Chosen One” has been in awe of “Gamebred’s” boxing skills. The two trained together at American Top Team but Woodley began spending more time at Roufusport. Ahead of his September 19 showdown with Colby Covington, Woodley finds himself training with Masvidal again.

Speaking to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Woodley laid out how he and Masvidal linked up again and why it’s beneficial (h/t BJPenn.com).

“So when he reached out, I said, ‘Hell yeah, let’s get him in. He’s holding me accountable – ‘Can’t do that; tonight we’re doing this, how much you weigh?’ We’ve had a long career because of our IQ and because we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations in training so that we can thrive in the Octagon. And I want to see him do well. I want to see him continue to make the money, do what he wants to do. And he wants to see me back on top.”

Woodley has been looking for that spark that led him to capture the 170-pound gold. “The Chosen One” had ruled the roost at welterweight but he dropped the title via unanimous decision to Kamaru Usman back on March 2, 2019. Woodley was out of action for over a year and tried to rebound against Gilbert Burns. It didn’t pan out as Burns also found success against Woodley, scoring the unanimous decision victory.

With the Covington fight, there is bad blood. Woodley is hoping to use this to his advantage and get the better of his former ATT teammate. Covington has hurled verbal shots at both Woodley and Masvidal. Besides wanting to get the upper hand in this heated feud, Woodley also wants to avoid suffering a third straight loss.
