Will Anthony Joshua End Up Fighting Oleksandr Usyk In 2021?

If Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury had their way, nothing would stop them from competing against one another in 2021. That includes potential mandatory challengers.

Recently, both heavyweight champions crossed paths while on vacation in Marbella. They wished one another luck in their upcoming fights. Agreeing in principle to fight one another in 2021, both must get through tough fighters.

Fury (30-0-1) is expected to face off against Deontay Wilder in a trilogy bout in December. The WBC and lineal Heavyweight Champion, must also deal with Dillian Whyte, the interim WBC Heavyweight Champion. Joshua (23-1), the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Champion, is scheduled to face mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev in December as well. According to the WBO, Joshua must defend his title against Oleksandr Usyk. During their meeting, it appeared Joshua subsided any of Fury’s worries of him facing Usyk.

“I knew he (Fury) was coming because I know a few people who know his mates,” Joshua told Sky Sports regarding their encounter. “I was walking to the port. What’s nice about the situation is that the port is a busy tourist attraction – so it’s not like we saw each other on a private golf course. We’re public people, normal people. I was walking down, he was driving. It was the most likely place to find someone like me or Tyson.

“He said: ‘Don’t lose to Kubrat Pulev!’ I said: ‘That’s something silly to say’. He said: ‘Have you got to fight Usyk?’ I said: ‘Look Tyson – when me and you can get a fight together, we don’t have to worry about Usyk. See you next year’. I said hello to Mrs. Fury, gave her a wave, and that was it.”

After winning the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight tournament, Usyk (17-0) decided to make the jump to heavyweight. He was supposed to face Tyrone Spong before Spong tested positive for a banned substance. Usyk then faced Chazz Witherspoon, beating him after a round seven corner retirement. He is expected to fight Dreck Chisora in October.

Usyk is attempting to insert himself in the race to become undisputed heavyweight champion. A two-fight series is currently in place for Joshua and Fury.
