Will Canelo Alvarez Approach Artur Beterbiev For Title Fight In 2022?

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has claimed that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is interested in taking on WBC/WBA light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.

Beterbiev, who is promoted by Top Rank, is scheduled to defend his titles against Marcus Browne on Friday in Canada. With a win over his mandatory challenger this week, Beterbiev will be brimming with confidence, and willing to take on a boxing juggernaut of Canelo’s stature.

Arum feels that Canelo wouldn’t mind facing his boxer in May or September once the undisputed champion at 168-pound.

“Yes. I know that he would [fight Beterbiev]. Eddy Reynoso is a great trainer and is very close to Canelo. I know Canelo pretty well, since he was a young man,” Arum asserted.

“He has expressed interest to me about fighting Beterbiev or Joe Smith Jr. I would look forward to May or September, the two dates that Canelo likes to fight, that he would fight one of those light-heavyweights.”

Canelo is currently preparing to take on WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. Their fight was announced by WBC at the 59th convention held in Mexico last month.

Both boxers were respectful of each other once the sanctioning body approved Canelo’s request that he had made to add another title to his decorated resume.
