Will Loma & Kambosos Fight For World Title Next Year?

George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko could face each other in Australia next year.

Lomachenko has already confirmed, via his promoter Bob Arum, that he will not be fighting this year. This was following his controversial unanimous-decision loss to Devin Haney, which prevented him from becoming undisputed at 135 pounds. However, many within the boxing community felt the Ukrainian had done more than enough to get the win.

Meanwhile, Kambosos’ last fight was a majority-decision win over Maxi Hughes. Once again, however, the decision was criticized, with many believing Hughes had landed the cleaner shots and should have been declared the winner. But now the two former world champions could have the right to fight for the IBF title.

Following Haney’s move up to 140, the ‘Dream’ must decide if he wants to vacate the belt. He is expected to face Regis Prograis at junior welterweight for the latter’s WBC belt. And since he is a champion in recess for the WBC belt at 135, Haney must decide where he goes next. And after having beaten Kambosos on two occasions already, another fight with the Australian may not make sense. However, since Kambosos is number two in the IBF rankings, a title could be on the line, as Arum targeted a potential fight.

“He’s taking some time off, and maybe we’ll look to match him with Kambosos in Australia next year,” Bob Arum said

Nevertheless, boxing fans were not entirely keen to see that fight happen. After all, both fighters had been linked with fighting Shakur Stevenson. Lomachenko was in line to face Stevenson for the vacant WBC belt, only to rule out fighting this year. Meanwhile, Kambosos was also put on notice by Shakur after the latter claimed that the Australian had lost in his fight with Hughes.
