Will The Inactive Jermell Charlo Be Fighting For A World Title?

Former Undisputed Junior Middleweight Champion Jermell Charlo (35-2-1) says he is in talks to face WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1), but an immediate title shot would result in criticism.

Charlo has not boxed since his September 2023 unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez, as he missed out on the undisputed super middleweight title, having jumped up from 154 pounds. Despite a nearly three-year hiatus, Charlo says he has secured verbal agreements to face Sebastian Fundora, Tim Tszyu, and Errol Spence Jr. Of the three potential bouts, a clash with Fundora appears to be the most immediate priority.

Charlo was ringside on March 28, 2026, to watch Fundora beat Keith Thurman via a sixth-round TKO. However, Charlo is ranked outside the top 15, while his comprehensive loss to Canelo does not warrant an immediate title shot, meaning any title fight would result in more criticism on the traditional sanctioning bodies which are facing pressure, as shown by Zuffa Boxing’s support for the Muhammad Ali Revival Act. 

“I’ll go the Fundora route because we’ve been in talks with Fundora, and I’m working on it with PBC. We in talks with Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence. All of them three guys have agreed to fight me,” Charlo said
