With Win Over Canelo, GGG Wants Saunders
Even though the rematch with Canelo Alvarez is on for September 15, Gennady Golovkin still has an eye on a potential future unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders.
It was recently revealed that Golovkin, the WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight champion, and Saunders, the WBO champion, signed on to fight August 25 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, if a deal for a rematch with Alvarez was not reached.
Even though the fight with Alvarez is on, Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, hinted a fight with Saunders may be next if Golovkin can get past his middleweight rival.
“That’s a great fight between two champions,” Loeffler said. “That’s a fight Gennady has wanted for a long time. My understanding was Canelo was gonna go in the direction of Danny Jacobs, although it doesn’t seem like they had a deal in place.
We already had a deal in place with Saunders. But naturally, the Canelo fight trumps any other fight and I was upfront with Frank Warren [Saunders’ promoter]. And we have to give Billy Joe Saunders credit, that he did agree to the fight. And hopefully, if Triple-G is successful in September, we can make that fight next.
Saunders was scheduled to defend his title against Martin Murray on June 23, but Saunders pulled out from the fight on June 3, citing an injury — the second such occurrence. Based on the report of the potential GGG-Saunders bout, Murray has accused Saunders of avoiding a title defense for the hopes of a bigger draw.
