Women’s 57kg & Men’s 68kg in Taekwondo

Olympic taekwondo action continued on Thursday, as the athletes in the women’s 57kg and men’s 68kg divisions competed.

Jade Jones of Great Britain won the gold medal in the women’s 57kg weight class, defeating Eva Calvo Gomez in the finals. Jones got up to a 6-0 quickly with two consecutive head kicks. Gomez’s coach challenged for one of the head kicks’ scoring to be invalidated, but the challenge was rejected. Jones severely outmatched her opponent, winning the bout by a score of 16-7.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 68kg gold medal match, Alexey Denisenko of Russia and Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan were evenly matched through the first two rounds. Denisenko, however, managed to just pull away in the final round and win the gold with a 10-6 final score.

Hedaya Wahba of Egypt won a bronze medal at women’s 57kg with a sudden death victory over Rahelah Asemani of Belgium after a scoreless tie in regulation. The other bronze in the weight class went to Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin of Iran, who defeated Nikita Glasnovic of Sweden 5-1.

The two bronze medals winners in the men’s 68kg division were Joel Gonzalez of Spain and Lee Daehoon of South Korea. Gonzalez took the lead in the third period of his bout with Edgar Contreras from Venezuela, and then prevented Contreras from tying to take the match by a score of 4-3. Thanks to three head kicks in his bout, Daehoon was able to stop Jaouad Achab from Belgium and win 11-7.
