Xander Zayas vs. Patrick Teixeira Set For Puerto Rican Day Weekend

Xander Zayas will headline against Patrick Teixeira in a junior middleweight clash during Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend on June 8.

Reports indicate the fight will be a ten-rounder from The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Zayas will follow in the footsteps of major Puerto Rican fighters to headline the weekend, including Hector Camacho, Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. Cotto defended his WBO Junior Welterweight Belt against Muhammad Abdullaev in 2005, securing a ninth-round TKO. Zayas will do the same 19 years later, putting his 18-0 record on the line. It is another piece of history in Zayas’ career, having been the youngest fighter signed to Top Rank when he joined at 16.

“Representing Puerto Rico on a date in which Boricua culture is celebrated and honored represents a sacred commitment that I have with my people. On June 8, I won’t just be fighting for myself. I’ll be fighting for every Puerto Rican who always perseveres when the going gets tough. This is my first main event and my first fight against a former world champion. I plan on carrying my flag and making it shine on one of the world’s biggest stages, ‘The Mecca of Boxing,” Zayas said
