Yana Kunitskaya Upsets Tonya Evinger

Yana Kunitskaya pulled off a shocker in the MMA world on Friday night, submitting Tonya Evinger in a little under two minutes to win the Invicta women’s bantamweight championship at Invicta FC 20.

Right away at the start of the bout, Evinger took down Kunitskaya, but the challenger began to work from her back. Evinger eventually locked an armbar in on the defending champion. Evinger attempted to defend and escape by stepping on Kunitskaya’s face, but was forced to surrender the bout and title when that failed.

Evinger entered this bout with nine straight wins, a streak snapped along with her title reign with this submission loss.

Meanwhile, Invicta strawweight champion Angela Hill retained her title with a decision victory over Kaline Medeiros.

Medeiros scored a takedown about three minutes into the bout, but Hill managed to nearly lock in a triangle choke submission. The hold, however, was good enough for Hill to land some elbows in on her opponent’s head for most of the rest of the round. In the second round, Hill managed to land a few hard punches, but once again was taken down by her challenger, and this time Medeiros was able to land some shots in on the dominant end on the ground before both fighters went back on their feet.

Hill countered a Medeiros takedown in the third to maintain control in the round, and she limited Medeiros’ moveset in the fourth and fifth rounds with her striking ability.

Hill won the bout with the judges’ scorecards reading all in her favor — 50-45, 49-46, 48-47.
