Yordenis Ugas Wins WBA Title Against Abel Ramos

The WBA (Regular) Welterweight Title fight between Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos has concluded.

On September 6, Ugas vs. Ramos headlined a PBC on FOX card. The action was held inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. This was the first major title opportunity for Ramos and the second for Ugas.

After falling just short of the WBC Welterweight Title on Match 9, 2019 against Shawn Porter, Ugas was hoping to make good on this WBA Championship opportunity. In the bout with Porter, Ugas was defeated via split decision.

Ramos tried to counter punch Ugas in the early going but it wasn’t working out. Ugas found success doubling up on his jab. A left hook from Ramos momentarily buckled Ugas. Ramos was having more success in the fifth round by firing off more punches but Ugas still utilized the double jab and connected with a right hand over the top near the end of the round.

Things got intense in the sixth round. Ugas swung for the fences and ended up falling down on the canvas. It wasn’t a knockdown and Ugas fired off shots to the body and upstairs with Ramos covering up against the ropes but also firing back.

The story of this fight was the jab of Ugas. He utilized that punch to set up combinations and limit the offense of Ramos. Ugas played with fire with just seconds left in the fight and was staggered by a left hook. The final bell sounded before more damage could be done. The bout went all 12 rounds and Ugas captured the WBA (Regular) Welterweight Title via split decision with scores of 111-117, 115-113, and 115-113.
