Young European boxing champion Vassilis Topalos passed away at the age of 16. He was hospitalized for the last few weeks in the intensive care unit of the Tzanios hospital.
According to the reports from Proto Thema, Topalos was seriously injured during the sparring matches on December 16, 2022, at a gym in Tavros.
The teenager felt sick during training, so he went to the bathroom and splashed some water on his face. However, he fainted and fell to the floor flat on his head, causing him to lose consciousness.
The Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, has asked the competent authorities and hierarchies to share facts behind the teenager’s death.
The Hellenic Boxing Federation (EOP) has announced that they will file a complaint against everyone involved in the investigation of any potential criminal liability.
“Gone is our Golden Child, our smiling Vassilis, the born Champion with a heart of pure gold. Unspeakable sadness for the Hellenic Boxing family,” EOP’s statement on the death of Topalos.
“Words cannot express what we feel, we are all devastated. Vasilis, you left us too soon. We will always remember you with love and nostalgia. Condolences to his family and loved ones. Let the soil that will cover you be light. You will forever be in our hearts.”
Topalos was considered one of the greatest talents in boxing, with many important distinctions in his young career.
