Yuriorkis Gamboa Allegedly Jailed After Fatal Car Accident
A source said that the boxer was not under the influence.
A former world champion has reportedly been put behind bars.
Several news outlets have reported that former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa has been jailed for allegedly fatally striking a pedestrian in a car accident on the night of December 31 in Santiago de Cuba in Cuba. It was first reported by Boxeo Cubano.
A source said that Gamboa was not under the influence and that it was just a tragic accident.
“[Legal] steps are already being taken to help Gamboa, although there are still many details to be clarified,” a source reportedly close to the situation told El Nuevo Herald.
“Something that we want to make clear is that Gamboa was not under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance. Gamboa is a very religious person and does not consume alcohol or anything improper.”
Gamboa, 41, was last in action this past April 16 when he was knocked out by Isaac Cruz, making many think that it may have been the last of his career.
It was his third loss in a row. Before that, he lost to Devin Haney in 2020 and was knocked out by Gervonta Davis in 2019.
Gamboa was a unified featherweight world champion between 2009 and 2011 as well as the WBA interim champ in both the super featherweight and lightweight divisions.
