Zhang Targets Parker After Joshua Looks Likely To Face Hrgovic

Zhilei Zhang, the WBO heavyweight interim champion, wants Joseph Parker if a fight with Anthony Joshua cannot be made.

Zhang’s career has had a resurgence at 40 after he stopped Joe Joyce in back-to-back wins. The heavyweight called out Tyson Fury, but the fight failed after Joyce exercised his rematch clause. The Gypsy King then faced Francis Ngannou. The Chinese then targeted Joshua following his dominant win over Otto Wallin. The Brit stopped the southpaw after round five.

Zhang and Joshua’s only meeting was at the 2012 London Olympics when Joshua beat Zhang. But Joshua will likely face Filip Hrgovic as the Deontay Wilder fight appears off the table. Parker, the former WBO heavyweight champion, beat Wilder in a unanimous decision, making him a viable opponent for Zhang, who is looking for the biggest fights.

“Parker might be a good option. Right now, he’s hot, and everybody is looking at him like, ‘Wow, he’s really good,’ and he’s won a couple of fights recently. So, if I can’t get any of these guys, Joseph Parker would be a good option. You never know. Styles make fights. I beat Parker in the 2011 world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, and that was a while ago. If he wants revenge, go ahead, come,” Zhang said

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Hrgovic is next for AJ. The winner of Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk must defend their IBF belt against their mandatory, who will be Hrgovic. A rematch clause means that if the winner of Fury-Usyk doesn’t face Hrgovic, they will be stripped. Since Joshua is second in the IBF rankings, a fight with Hrgovic for the IBF title is likely.

“It’ll be Hrgovic vs. AJ for the world title. I’m so happy to see him smiling and performing so well,” Hearn stated
