Super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga (24-2, 19 KOs) was arrested on October 26 in Polk County, Florida, and charged with misdemeanor battery and felony aggravated battery.
The charges stem from an alleged incident on October 18. Further details have not been made public. Berlanga appeared at Bartow Courthouse, which is 50 miles south of Orlando, on Tuesday, where a judge set his combined bail at $16,000.
The 29-year-old faces a first-degree misdemeanor battery charge, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, and a second-degree felony aggravated battery charge.
Berlanga is scheduled to appear for arraignment on November 17, when he will formally enter a plea. Neither Berlanga nor his representatives have publicly commented on the charges.
The Brooklyn-born Puerto Rican boxer last fought on July 26, recovering from an early knockdown to stop Steven Butler in the seventh round of their super middleweight contest at Zuffa Boxing 9 in New York. He had been linked with fights against Jaime Munguia and Chris Eubank Jr. for late January 2027.
Berlanga previously challenged Canelo Alvarez for the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles in September 2024, losing by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
