Bob Arum Didn’t Realize How Good Teofimo Lopez Is
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum admits he didn’t know just how good Teofimo Lopez is.
Lopez is riding high following his massive upset victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko. “The Takeover” defeated Lomachenko via unanimous decision. With the win, Lopez captured the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), and WBO Lightweight Titles. Going into the bout, Lopez already held the IBF gold.
Lopez vs. Lomachenko was promoted by Top Rank Boxing. Arum told BoxingScene.com that Lopez’s performance took him by surprise.
“The kid surprised me in the sense that I knew he was good, but I didn’t realize how good. Because we’ve never seen a performance by him like this. We always saw him go out and whack some poor unfortunate guy out, and that’s all we thought he had. But obviously, he has a lot more.”
Arum went on to say that Lopez looked as if he had the experience of a grizzled veteran despite being just 23 years old.
“He fought like a real mature guy. You’ve gotta give his father credit because the father really trains him. That was a magnificent job that he did, having him fight the fight that he did. It was like a seasoned professional. A really seasoned old-timer would fight a fight like that.”
Lopez improved his pro boxing record to 16-0 with the win over Lomachenko. This is the first loss for “Loma” since March 2014. That was a split decision defeat to Orlando Salido. “Loma” underwent shoulder surgery after the bout and isn’t expected to resume boxing activities until late January.
