Could A Rising Star End Up Facing Canelo Alvarez?

While he hasn’t been fighting as long as Canelo Alvarez has, Jason Quigley has slowly made himself known within the boxing world. His recent credentials could suggest he is ready to face the middleweight king.

Among the many competitors on his list, Quigley (18-1) has been informed that he could be close to facing Canelo. Quigley is a member of Golden Boy, where Canelo fights under.

“Turning professional on July 12, on the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, on the Canelo-Lara undercard, and now look at us,” Quigley stated to Sky Sports. “A few years on and I’m possibly going to be fighting Canelo Alvarez. It’s been a crazy career for me. It’s been an enjoyable one, there’s been a lot of ups and downs.

“But it’s a high possibility now. Golden Boy and my Sheer Sports Management team have been in touch with me. They have offered me the fight, to fight Canelo Alvarez, and it’s all there. We’re just waiting now for the possibility. Of course, there’s other boxers that could possibly be getting the fight as well. But I have been asked, ‘would I take the fight?’ 100 percent, I said ‘yes.'”

Quigley made his pro debut in 2014, beating Howard Reece via TKO. It took until his seventh pro fight in the middle of 2019 to lose his first bout. He lost to Tureano Johnson last July via corner retirement. Fighting in four fights in 2019, Quigley won two more after the loss. The 29-year-old beat Abraham Cordero and Fernando Marin, both via knockout. The Irish-born Quigley has 14 wins via knockout.

Several names in mind to face Canelo (53-1-2) include Callum Smith, John Ryder, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and Caleb Plant. A trilogy bout with Gennadiy Golovkin wouldn’t take place until 2021. Fighting since 2005, Canelo has not lost a bout since 2013 against Floyd Mayweather. A multi-division champion, the idea of facing Canelo is something that Quigley can get behind.

“I want to get in with the best in the world. Canelo Alvarez is the best out there at the minute, he’s the face of boxing, and I want to get in there and I want to see how good he really is, and give him everything I’ve got, if it all comes off,” Quigley ended up saying.

Quigley now just has to wait and see if there will be restrictions on travel if Canelo will only fight in the United States. Canelo is hoping to compete in September.
