Covington vs. Lawler Reportedly Set For UFC Newark

According to ESPN, a bout between former interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler is set for UFC Fight Night on August 3rd. The event will be taking place inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The last time Covington (14-1) fought was this time last year when he beat Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225. That was for the interim Welterweight Championship. Covington was set to face then-champion Tyron Woodley but was unable to compete following surgery. Following Woodley v. Darren Till, Covington was stripped of the interim belt.

Covington was close to receiving another title opportunity but it has not come to fruition. When asked why he took the bout against Lawler, Covington told Ariel Helwani that the UFC needed a main event on short notice so he agreed to the fight. He also stated he will be defending the title he was stripped of against “the last real champion this division has had” in Lawler.

Following a loss to Ben Askren at UFC 235, Lawler (28-13, 1NC) is looking to break out of a two-fight losing streak. The former Welterweight Champion’s last win was against Donald Cerrone at UFC 214 back in 2017.

As far as the champion Kamaru Usman goes, he is recovering from double hernia surgery and is slated to return to the octagon in November.
