Fury’s Cutman Steps Up Measures To Avoid Another Cut Vs. Usyk

Jorge Capetillo, Tyson Fury’s cutman, has measures in place to prevent The Gypsy King’s cut re-opening.

Fury faces Oleksandr Usyk for the Undisputed Heavyweight Title on May 18. The WBC Heavyweight Champion pulled out of the February 17 date after sustaining a big cut over his right eye in sparring. It was the second time The Gypsy King withdrew, as the fight was first set for December 23 last year.

Turki Alalshikh responded by imposing a $10 million fine on either fighter if they pulled out again. Fury’s cut should ideally take three months to heal, making a June fight more practical. Now, Usyk could target that eye, but Capetillo has steps in place to get his fighter ready.

“There’s always a possibility that it could reopen, but Tyson has to do what he is good at with his distance, reach, not trying to knock him out in one punch. For a heal, it should take like 90 days but it’s been 60 days or more since the cut so I am sure with the right treatment, he should be ready for May 18.

“Soon he can start with some light sparring, nothing hard but to get the reach and distance right. It is more important than power punches with reach and timing. Tyson has to treat the cut well before the fight and do sparring sessions with nice head gear. He needs to start with nothing crazy to make sure he doesn’t get hit hard, so it doesn’t re-open,” Capetillo said

Fellow heavyweight boxer Dereck Chisora expects Fury to box against Usyk to mitigate any damage to his eye. That would be a reversal of his recent style adopted under SugarHill Steward. Following Ben Davidson’s departure, Fury became a much more aggressive fighter. Their first fight together resulted in a Deontay Wilder stoppage in the rematch following the first bout. However, adopting that style may prove costly against the southpaw as Usyk is a precise puncher.

“Fury is going to have to box. He can’t stand there because his eye is not healed yet. Under the eye is still cut. I know that Usyk is going to be training to tag the eye to get it to open the eye up. So, it’s going to be a bloodbath. Yes, with the way he wants it all now, totally different,” Chisora stated
