Holm Returns to Australia vs. Pennington
Holly Holm will be returning to the arena where she made history and shook up the world of MMA, as she will face Raquel Pennington at UFC 243 on Oct. 5.
ESPN reports both women have verbally agreed to the bout but contracts have yet to be signed.
This will be Holm’s first fight in Australia since UFC 193 in November 2015 — also taking place at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne — where she scored a second-round knockout of Ronda Rousey to win the UFC women’s bantamweight championship in one of the sport’s greatest upsets.
In addition, this UFC 243 encounter will be a rematch of Holm’s UFC debut at UFC 184 earlier in 2015. Holm defeated Pennington via a highly controversial decision.
Things have been rocky for Holm since the title win, however, as she quickly dropped the championship to Miesha Tate. She has gone from 10-0 following the upset victory to a current 12-5 record — four of the losses coming in title bouts.
Holm most recently competed at UFC 239, challenging current female 135-pound (and 145-pound) champ Amanda Nunes and losing via first-round knockout.
Pennington competed at UFC San Antonio a few weeks ago, defeating Irene Aldana via split decision. She challenged Nunes for the bantamweight title at UFC 224 last year, losing via fifth-round TKO.
