Is Showtime Boxing Interested In Canelo Alvarez?

Could Showtime Boxing be back in the Canelo Alvarez business?

Canelo is considered to be boxing’s biggest star. He signed a massive 11-fight deal with DAZN worth a minimum of $365 million back in 2018. We are now past the midway point of 2020 and things have turned sour between Canelo and the sports streaming service. In fact, Canelo is suing DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya.

Speaking to Forbes, Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza had the following to say on potentially snagging Canelo as a result of the fallout with his promoter and DAZN.

“We’d love to. We’re proud of the time we spent with Canelo. We did some important fights in his career, and we helped launch him as a PPV attraction in the U.S. We’d love to be in business with him again. We’re obviously going to respect his existing contracts. We’re not going to run afoul of that. If there’s a time when he’s available, we’ll be very aggressive. We have a lot of offers. But the time to pursue that is only after it’s clear he’s contractually able to do so.”

As mentioned, Canelo is no stranger to Showtime. He took on Floyd Mayweather back in 2013 and that fight aired on Showtime PPV.  Canelo did battle with Joseito Lopez in the year prior in a highly-anticipated fight that aired on the Showtime network and reportedly topped one million viewers.

Canelo hasn’t competed since November 2, 2019. He stopped Sergey Kovalev via knockout in the 11th round to capture the WBO Light-Heavyweight Championship. It’s been reported that DAZN is unwilling to pay Canelo a $35 million guarantee due to the lack of “premium” opponents.
