Jones Champ Once Again; Calls Out Lesnar

Jon Jones is back.

In a rivalry rematch that was two-and-a-half years in the making, Jones defeated Daniel Cormier to reclaim the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in the main event of UFC 214, which took place from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

After the title was strapped around his waist, Jones collapsed to the ground, filled with emotion.

“It feels unbelievable,” Jones said. “It’s a surreal moment. I know it hasn’t been easy to root for me. I love you guys so much.”

The ring rust some felt Jones might have had seemed non-existent from the opening bell. Cormier tried to come in close to disarm Jones’ reach advantage, but Jones was in control of the first round, nailing Cormier with several hard shots from in close. Cormier, to his credit, threw some hard low kicks and a couple of nice combinations on Jones. Cormier also used these to take control and not give Jones space, going on to win the second round.

But in the third round, Jones caught Cormier with a hard head kick that rocked Cormier before following up with strikes and elbows on the ground until referee John McCarthy called a stop to the bout.

A depressed Cormier left the cage before the decision was read but was brought back in.

“I thought the fight was going well,” Cormier said. “I don’t even know what happened. If you win both fights, I guess there isn’t a rivalry.”

Jones then took the mic to call out Brock Lesnar.

“Lesnar, if you want to know what it’s like to get your [butt] kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in the Octagon,” Jones said.

Lesnar later responded via the Associated Press, stating, “Be careful what you wish for, young man.”

In other main card action, Tyron Woodley retained the UFC Welterweight Championship by defeating Demian Maia via unanimous decision. While Woodley stuffed every takedown attempt from Maia, the fight was greatly criticized for being non-exciting.

Despite a tough chin from Tonya Evinger, Cris Cyborg walked out the new UFC women’s featherweight champ via third-round TKO. In a great fight that left fans wanting more, Robbie Lawler defeated Donald Cerrone by decision. And Volkan Oedzemir defeated Jimi Manuwa, finishing him in just 22 seconds.
