What are Casey O’Neill’s plans after beating Lara Procopio?
UFC newcomer Casey O’Neill is already making waves in the organization as she beat Lara Procopio with a third-round technical submission on Saturday to win her second fight in a row. The women’s flyweight increased her tally to 7-0 in her pro career with this win. Not just in grappling, but O’Neill outstruck Procopio (176-74) too before submitting her in the third round.
Once the fight was over, the flyweight explained how her cornermen’s belief in her abilities earned her victory. “I was overhyping her grappling in my head a little before the fight. My coaches were like, ‘You’re a sick grappler. You need to trust yourself.’ As soon as I got her back, she lifted her head and I got that choke in. I got the finish. That felt awesome,” O’Neil said in the post-fight interview. The 23-year-old said that he wants to beat everyone from bottom to top. She plans to fight till she’s 35 and is in no rush to aim for the title just yet.
The King is a grappler at heart. She may have started kickboxing first, but as she put it, her body is built for grappling. “Once I get on someone’s back, you can’t get me off. It was nice to show that. Two fights and two finishes in the UFC. I couldn’t be happier.”
