Chael Sonnen Has Some Advice For Conor McGregor

Chael Sonnen has shared a piece of advice for Conor McGregor.

McGregor has been a proven draw in the UFC. He has set records for the UFC both in terms of pay-per-view buys and live gate numbers. His October 2018 bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov reportedly drew 2.4 million pay-per-view buys, a record for UFC PPV cards.

Things haven’t exactly been rosy between McGregor and the UFC as of late. The “Notorious” one recently leaked text messages outlining potential plans that had been in place for him. UFC President Dana White was none too pleased with McGregor’s decision to release the texts.

McGregor has been teasing an exhibition MMA bout with Dustin Poirier outside of the UFC for charity. During an interview with, Sonnen warned that McGregor shouldn’t try to play promoter.

“I wish Conor the best, but if I could give Conor any advice, and I’ve given him plenty over the years – do not go into the promoting game. You’re going to fall on your face, and you don’t know what you’re doing.”

Sonnen went on to say that any attempts of a fighter to promote events are all smoke and mirrors.

“I don’t think Conor will ever promote a fight any more than Floyd Mayweather ever promoted a boxing event. Floyd runs around with TMZ and the Money Team – you couldn’t pull into their office right now if you wanted to, because it doesn’t exist. It’s not real, any more than McGregor Sports and Entertainment is real. It’s just some names that they put on a letter and file for a tax ID number. These aren’t real things. But he needs to keep it that way.”

McGregor’s next move hasn’t been determined but White claims the former UFC “champ-champ” was offered a rematch with Poirier under the UFC banner. It’ll be interesting to see if the bout comes to fruition.
