Conor McGregor Aiming For Welterweight Title Fight For Return
Conor McGregor planned to fight with Charles Oliveira for his return, but now he wants to fight against the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, Kamaru Usman, for the welterweight gold.
McGregor already has the experience of fighting a No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter, which is when he faced Jose Aldo for the featherweight title; Aldo was at the top of all the divisions. However, McGregor had no problem brutally knocking him out under 13 seconds.
But is McGregor in the same shape?
He is 33 years old and suffered several injuries. He suffered a broken tibia in his latest fight and is out for a while. He just started sparring in boxing and will start training full-time in several weeks.
He is the first-ever double champion in the UFC, so he believes that he can add more achievements to his collections. He already has the lightweight belt, and now he wants to fight for the heavier one and does not consider “The Nigerian Nightmare” as the problem.
“Myself versus Usman for the 170lbs title in my comeback fight is the one I’m eyeballing at the minute,” McGregor told The Mac Life.
“Why cut the weight? I’ve already won the 155lbs title. I got myself to a lightweight frame, but you know, I’m big now. I feel big, I feel strong, I feel healthy, I’ve got good energy. I’m coming back from a gruesome injury. I don’t want to be depleting myself. There should be no need to deplete myself.
“And I feel confident against Usman – a jab-happy, sloppy, orthodox wrestler with no submissions whatsoever. What’s he going to do? Where’s the danger here?
“I don’t see danger.”
Usman may be defending his title next against Leon Edwards in their rematch, so McGregor’s plans might be delayed/
“I’m very excited, there is history to be made,” McGregor said. “This game needs to be shook up again. The triple crown has never been done.
“Late summer I could [return], but I want to be true to myself and bring out the best in myself. I want to do this for my fans and the people supporting me. I want to show the best I can possibly be.”
