First Karate Standings For Tokyo 2020 Released

Following the intial qualification period for Karate’s debut at the Olympic Games in 2020 began on July 2nd, the first standings have been released for the historic opportunity.

The first event to be included in the Olympic qualification process was the 2018 AKF Senior Championships. The tournament was held in Jordan, on July 11-15th with Japan topping the medal count.

With the tournament only open to Asian karatekas, the initial Olympic standings only feature those competitors.

World champions and gold medalists in Jordan, Kiyou Shimizu and Ryo Kiyuna of Japan top the standings of the Female and Male Kata, while Kayo Someya takes the second place in Female Kumite +61kg with the same number of points as leader and gold medallist in Amman Hamideh Abbasa of Iran.

The Olympic Standings will be updated the first of each month. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification process for Karate will end on June 2, 2020 when the final list of qualified athletes will be published.
