VanZant Comes Up With A Plan For Her Fight Future
The road back to fighting for Paige VanZant has been a bumpy one, but she is hoping the next few months will be worth all of the trouble.
VanZant (8-4) suffered a broken arm at the hands of Jessica-Rose Clark in January 2018, forcing her to wait a year to compete. She was supposed to compete at UFC Brasilia, but once again fractured her arm. Between surgeries, she beat Rachael Ostovich via submission. The process has been tough for her, but Paige has managed to work through it.
“It was hard for me at first to say, ‘Yeah, I’ll have the surgery, let’s fix the break and then let’s plan on having a second surgery.’ It was hard to agree to all of that when I knew how long it was going to take me out of fighting,” VanZant told MMA Fighting. But ultimately it’s the right thing to do.”
The issue VanZant is dealing with is getting the plate out of her arm. The screws in her arm following surgery go all around the area. She will need to go through another surgery in order to become herself once again.
VanZant has since announced she is ready to go. She thought over her journey to this moment and realizes another one is upcoming. “12 Gauge” is planning for the future, seeing how she is a free agent after her next upcoming fight. Will the UFC sign her or will she take her talents elsewhere? Her plan is simple:
“The timeline is fight one more time [and] I’ll be in contract negotiations at that point,” VanZant went on to say. “I’ll be a free agent. Theoretically that could take a long time to go through that negotiation process. So it’s the perfect time to have one more arm surgery and heal it the right way.
“By the time negotiations are over, I’ll have a new contract. I’ll [have] a fight lined up. All of that will give me plenty of time to heal my arm correctly.”
On a one-fight win streak, VanZant is 2-3 in her last five fights. Her husband, Austin Vanderford, currently fights for Bellator MMA. It is unknown if she would take her talents there.
