What Could Be Next For Mairis Briedis?
Newly crowned IBF Cruiserweight Champion Mairis Briedis might be planning a big move.
Briedis was in action this past Saturday, September 26. He took on Yuniel Dorticos for the IBF gold. This bout also served as the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Final. Briedis won the fight via majority decision.
Having won multiple titles in the cruiserweight division, many have wondered if Briedis could be due for a heavyweight run. Speaking to Dan Rafael, Briedis said he’s mulling over the idea.

“I am considering a move to heavyweight,” Briedis said. “But right now I will rest a bit before I make any decisions.”
Briedis went on to say that there was a period where he felt a bit off following his January 2018 loss to Oleksandr Usyk but he feels it ultimately helped make him a better boxer.
“I was down after the Usyk fight. Usyk was better that night, and it is what it is. But looking back I can see that a lot of things around me and in my team have changed. And everything has gone better since that fight. I really don’t know if I would have won that night if my career would have advanced the way it has.”
Briedis is riding a four-fight winning streak. In that span, he’s beaten Dorticos, Krzysztof Glowacki, Noel Gevor, and Brandon Deslaurier. The defeat to Usyk remains the lone career loss for Briedis.
