GGG Named New President Of World Boxing

Former Unified Middleweight Champion Gennadiy Golovkin has officially been named as the new President of World Boxing at the 2025 Congress in Rome, succeeding Dutchman Boris van der Vorst.

Golovkin will serve an initial three-year term, as he secured the position as the sole candidate after an Independent Vetting Panel excluded the others. Golovkin takes the helm of World Boxing, an organization founded to reform amateur boxing and keep the sport at the heart of the Olympics. Golovkin has promised that athletes will be at the heart of every decision, with a focus on restoring trust in Olympic boxing ahead of the LA 2028 Games. Golovkin has also been the President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee since 2024.

“It is a privilege to be elected as the new President of World Boxing. But this is just the beginning. Starting today, athletes will be at the heart of every decision we make. On the road to LA28, we will restore trust in Olympic boxing to secure our place in Brisbane and beyond. Now it’s time to move forward as one united boxing family,” Golovkin said

Elsewhere, in the contest for Vice President, Ryan O’Shea of Canada secured a second term, winning with 57 percent of the vote against Thailand’s Chaiwat Chotima. For the two open seats on the World Boxing Executive Board, the winners were Michael Muller from Germany and Tatsuya Nakama from Japan, who emerged with the most votes from a field of six candidates. These four winners will join the comprehensive Executive Board.
