Golovkin-Szeremeta Reportedly Finalized for June
In today’s new world and the coronavirus outbreak, nothing is guaranteed. If everything were to come into place, however, we could see the return of Gennadiy Golovkin.
According to ESPN, Golvkin and Kamil Szeremeta are set to clash inside The Forum in Inglewood, California. The date at the moment is for June 6 on DAZN. Golovkin’s IBF Middleweight Championship would be on the line.
The two have had talks about competing against one another as early as March. The fight got delayed to April and then delayed again once Golovkin (40-1-1) filed an extension with the IBF to push back his mandatory title defense. This was a result of a calf injury he suffered. Now, plans for the fight appears to be full speed ahead.
After suffering the first loss of his career against Canelo Alvarez back in 2018, Golovkin won a rebound fight against Steve Rolls before facing Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the IBF and IBO Middleweight belts. It was a fight Golovkin survived, as Derevyanchenko pushed him to the limit. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn stated that Golovkin was feeling ill prior to the fight.
Szeremeta is undefeated at 21-0 and has five knockouts to his credit. He last competed in October, beating Oscar Cortes via TKO. It was the undercard of the GGG fight against Derevyanchenko.
Due to the unpredictability of the coronavirus, and how many events have already been postponed due to it, it is unknown if this fight will take place. With time until it happens, however, all boxing fans can do now is hope and wait.
