Egis Klimas, Vasily Lomachenko’s manager, says Gervonta Davis is a more suitable opponent than Shakur Stevenson.
Loma has not boxed since May last year when he stopped George Kambosos Jr. to win the vacant IBF Lightweight Title. He has been linked with a Tank fight since 2018. However, the fight never got made with suggestions Davis was ducking him. Recent speculation over a fight emerged following Tank’s win over Frank Martin last year. However, Lomachenko’s team said the Ukrainian had no motivation to fight, suggesting he may retire.
Davis then faced Lamont Roach in a controversial majority draw after Tank escaped a knockdown call in round nine. While Davis is expected to reamtch Roach, his performace may have given Loma confidence of winning. That has made a Tank fight more probable than facing Shakur, as Klimas felt the styles would make it more entertaining for the fans, unlike Shakur, who is known for being very defensive.
“What is a Shakur and what is a Tank?” said Klimas when asked which is the better fight for Lomachenko between Shakur Stevenson and Tank Davis. Skill and financial. He’s [Tank] a much better fighter in my way and an upcoming fighter. I’m not going to take anything away from Shakur. He’s a good fighter, but he’s a bumper. He goes into a shell and runs away. Tank comes to fight. It’s a more interesting fight. It’s a more intriguing fight. That’s what makes it more interesting. That’s what makes it more interesting to fans. Right now, Lomachenko is the best opponent to fight Tank,” Klimas said
