Tommy McMillen, a 28-year-old featherweight who trains under Tim Welch at Arizona’s Red Hawk Academy alongside Sean O’Malley, earned his second consecutive UFC performance bonus by stopping Alberto Montes on the main card of UFC Oklahoma City.
McMillen landed 252 significant strikes, breaking Nate Diaz’s 15-year-old record for the most significant strikes landed in a three-round UFC fight. Diaz previously held the mark with 238 against Donald Cerrone at UFC 141 in December 2011. McMillen surpassed the record despite finishing Montes before the final bell.
“I’m a real American gangster,” McMillen
“Uncle Dana, Hunter, send me a Mexican on September 12 in Arizona. I’m coming home,” McMillen
McMillen survived being rocked twice in the opening round before gradually wearing Montes down against the fence with punches, elbows and knees. He secured the third-round stoppage after dropping Montes with a straight right and following with a knee up the middle.
