Edgar Berlanga Eyes Canelo Alvarez Showdown

Edgar Berlanga wants a Canelo Alvarez fight for this year.

Canelo’s next opponent has been confirmed as an American. Alvarez made the announcement on Mexican TV, as Jermall Charlo, Terence Crawford, and David Benavidez were initial possibilities. Charlo backtracked on comments saying he was fighting Canelo, while Alvarez dismissed fighting Crawford. That left Benavidez as an option since the Mexican Monster is American. But Benavidez’s promoter has said Canelo has no intention of making that fight in 2024, leaving Berlanga with an outside chance. The American super middleweight is undefeated in his 21 fights, which include 16 stoppages. He faces 35-year-old Padraig McCrory on Saturday, with all eyes on Canelo if he comes through.

“I got to really perform my a** off in this fight. I’ve got to make a statement. I’ve got to do my thing in this fight and really look phenomenal, and I feel that right there should be an opener for a fight with Canelo in 2024. I know he [Canelo] has all the titles, but I’m young. One thing I have is an Island behind me. I got Puerto Rico. So, I think it’s based on how I look in my next fight [against 35-year-old Padraig McCrory]. I’m looking forward to dominating this dude, beating him up, and doing my thing, and eventually, that’ll open up doors for us in 2024 against Canelo Alvarez,” Berlanga said

Alvarez has two fights left on his PBC deal. If there is no guaranteed opponent, Canelo could crossover to DAZN for a Berlanga fight. Alvarez has done business with DAZN, having fought on the platform before signing with PBC.

But a major stumbling block is Benavidez’s mandatory situation. The WBC Super Middleweight Interim Champion has been mandatory for over a year as Mauricio Sulaiman will mandate the fight in March. That leaves Canelo with a choice to vacate or fight Benavidez, leaving Berlanga waiting in the wings.
