Gervonta Davis And Canelo Alvarez Dubbed The ‘Faces of Boxing’

Gervonta Davis and Canelo Alvarez have been called the ‘faces of boxing.’

That is according to Andre Ward. Davis set the record for the highest gate last year when he stopped Ryan Garcia in the seventh round. The fight also sold over 1.2 million PPVs, as Davis called himself the ‘face of boxing.’ He suffered a setback after being jailed for 44 days for breaking his house arrest conditions over a hit-and run. But Davis reminded everyone of his star power as he stopped Frank Martin on his first Amazon Prime PPV in his last fight.

Canelo set a live gate of over $20 million last year when he faced Jermell Charlo. While he has been criticized for not boxing David Benavidez, Canelo still sells. He did more than 500,000 PPV buys for the Jaime Munguia fight. He will now box Edgar Berlanga on September 14, as Canelo will compete with the UFC 306 event headlined by Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili. Ward felt Davis and Canelo were the two biggest fighters.

“If I had to say who’s the face of boxing now, I think the face of boxing is a two-headed monster right now. I think it’s Gervonta Davis — you cannot deny what he’s done, you cannot deny what he generates, and you cannot deny the performances — and you also cannot deny what Canelo Alvarez has done for a very long time.

“I think one thing they both have in common is Gervonta had Floyd Mayweather, Mayweather gave a cold alley-hoop to Gervonta, Gervonta took the alley-hoop and took it to the next level. If you look at the history of Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez had an amazing alley-hoop from Oscar De La Hoya, the biggest fighter in the game at one point in time and the biggest Mexican fighter before Canelo came. You have to give both of those fighters credit because they took the alley-hoop and they did something with it. A lot of fighters fumble the bag or fumbled the alley-hoop or fumbled the ball — they didn’t do that,” Ward said
