Oscar De La Hoya criticized Canelo Alvarez’s $89.99 PPV price for his Edgar Berlanga fight.
Canelo will defend his WBA, WBO, and WBC super middleweight belts during Mexican Independence Weekend on September 14. The fight will compete with UFC 306, which features the headline event between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili. The fight occurs at The Sphere, the first time a combat sports event will take place at the arena.
Canelo will face serious competition, as the audience may become split. Meanwhile, the Saudis want to set a PPV price of less than $20 globally. Fans would have more choice, preventing Canelo from charging high prices unless it was for competitive fights. De La Hoya has slammed Alvarez for making fans pay that much. Oscar has also said he will not attend Canelo-Berlanga, choosing the UFC 306 card instead.
“We’re away from the boxing match that nobody asked for and the UFC event that everybody will be watching. Canelo is fighting Berlanga, another snoozefest. They’re trying to sell a PPV for $90 at a $500 minimum in person. It’s just robbery at this point to pay for another lame Canelo that always goes the distance against a sub-par opponent. I love the sport of boxing more than anything, and I will be watching boxing matches anywhere,” De La Hoya said
